Title of Project:
FIB'ers Kid's Trips and Juniors Program
FIB'ers Fishing Club
FIB'ers is a Christ-centered, inter-denominational fishing club. Established in 1983 by our founder Dean Gilbert; the club is celebrating 26 years of great fishing and fellowship. Our objective is to create a comfortable, fun, and relaxed environment in which Christian fishermen, their families and their guests may fish and enjoy Christian fellowship. We encourage family participation in all of our activities and welcome single men and women to our club. Our yearly activities include: saltwater charter boat fishing, private boaters tournaments, lake and river trout fishing trips and bay tournaments. We also take disadvantaged kids from Orange County out fishing or whale watching every year.
In an effort to pass on our love of sports fishing to our children, we have created a "Fib'ers Junior Division" that has it's own tournaments, charter fishing trips, and yearly awards. FIB'ers is unique in that there is no formal membership. There are also no initial fees or yearly dues. All club expenses are paid from free-will donations. Monthly Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7pm.Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at Newport Mesa Church in Costa Mesa, CA.
The Kid's trips take children from local facilities such as Orangewood, where children are neglected, abused, wards of the court, etc. They range in age from 8-17 years old. For all of these kids it is their first time being on the water. The FIB'ers Club practices Conservation techniques on both the Kid's and Junior's Program trips. They emphasis catch and release, fish with circle hooks, and educate the children about fishing technique a well as the environment around them. If kids want to keep a fish, the Club limits them to only keeping 2-3 fish so that they learn to not be overly consumptive.
No Permits are required
The State of California mandates that children coming from such facilities as Orangewood have one adult per four children during activities. Club members volunteer their time to be an escort to the children on these trips.
Each trip costs approximately $1500. They are able to take anywhere from 20-30 kids on each trip, with escorts. The FIB'ers receives
discounts from Newport Landing and also receives funding from Friends of Rollo to help offset the costs of the trips. All other funding comes directly from donations of club members. Rods/Reels are donated from Friends of Rollo. Tackle is donated from Newport Landing as well as donations that club members provide.
Estimated Time Requirements:
Trips range from ½ day to ¾ day. Each volunteer will spend 6-10 hours per trip.
The difficulty that the club has found has been providing enough "escorts" or volunteers to accompany the children on trips. When the fishing is good there is no shortage of volunteers but when it is slow people are less enthused to go on the water.
The benefits of these programs are being able to teach children about the marine environment and expose them to a new and exciting experience that brightens their lives even if for a day. The kids come off the boat smiling and happy. They learn a few lessons on how to fish, have the opportunity to ask as many questions as they can to knowledgeable people. For the volunteers, they have the satisfaction of knowing they were instrumental in making these kids smile and helping them to have a fun day on the water. They are also able to pass on the conservation message that the FIB'ers Club practices and promotes.
